Who You Should Call, in Order, After Property Damage

Owning a home or commercial property is a significant financial investment, and unfortunately most all of us will be faced with property damage at some point or another. To safeguard against unexpected additional expenses, we purchase homeowners insurance to protect us and our investment, but dealing with property damage or a property damage claim can be burdensome, to say the least.

If you experience property damage to your Florida home, you may be unsure what steps to take first. Here are some important actions you should take immediately to prevent further damage to your home as well as get on the road to repair and restoration as quickly as possible.

Who to Call if You Experience Property Damage
  1. Once you identify damage to your property, one of your very first phone calls should be to us at Silverberg|Brito, PLLC. We’ll work with you step-by-step to understand your situation and facilitate the entire claims’ process, relieving the burden from you and helping ensure that the cost to repair the damage you’ve experienced is covered by your insurance company.
  2. After you’ve notified us, we will report the damage to your insurance company for you and initiate the claims process on your behalf. After receiving our call, your insurance company has 14 calendar days to review and acknowledge receipt of our communication pursuant to Florida Statute 627.70131.
  3. Next, get the camera rolling and document your damage with photos and videos. As you record, simply show what you see. There is no need to add additional commentary when recording your damage. Then, take steps to prevent further damage to your property. This may require a call for outside professional help depending on the extent of your damage. For example, if your window is broken, you’ll want to board it up so water doesn’t get inside and cause further water or mold damage.

After your home has been damaged, there will be what feels like a laundry list of to-do’s, and yes, there will be much to get done beyond taking these first few action steps. The good news, however, is that you won’t be alone. We’ll be here to help.

As a law firm that deals with property insurance claims every single day, we understand how burdensome the process can be for homeowners, which is why we commit to guiding you through the process and doing everything we can to restore your home and your life to normalcy as quickly as possible after experiencing damage.
