Friends Don’t Let Friends Use LegalZoom for Their Business

One of the primary reasons we hear that small business owners turn to LegalZoom is that they believe they can secure effective legal forms, documents, or contracts for less than the cost of hiring a lawyer.

Because money is a motivating factor, especially for new business owners with tight budgets, the allure of turning to fast and cheap services that they deem “good enough” is certainly real.

But we’re going to stop you right there.

Why LegalZoom is Risky

There are several reasons to steer clear of online DIY legal websites like LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer.

In terms of cost, many of the templated documents they try to sell you on their website can be found for free elsewhere. If it’s just the form you’re looking for, save the cash and simply print the template yourself.

More importantly, however, are the legal repercussions that could come with unknowingly making mistakes or omissions on the forms. The templates offered through LegalZoom are generic in nature, and there is no legal guidance provided when filling them out. In fact, there are disclaimers on LegalZoom’s site acknowledging that “…the legal information on the site is not legal advice and is not guaranteed to be correct, complete or up-to-date.”

As noted in our blog about creating a CSA for your business, the worst is when two Florida parties have to litigate in Honolulu, Hawaii because they chose to use a generic form for their contract. Our advice is simple: If it is important enough to write down and spend money on, care enough to do it right.
